What do we find so appealing about watching celebrities like Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan unravel? Do we take pleasure in hearing about their pain? Do their troubles somehow make us feel better about ourselves? Or, are tabloid scandals just entertainment? Do you enjoy reading tabloid gossip?
I like to see people ruining their own lives and doingn things because they think it will get them attention. I like reading about this kind of stuff and I think this is all just entertainment.
Research shows that high school students are drinking and driving less than they were 30 years ago, and the number of people killed by drunken drivers is down by more than half. Still, about 10,000 people die each year in traffic accidents involving impaired drivers. Do you think drinking and driving is still a problem for teenagers?
I think it is a big problem for teenagers. People at this point in their lives are starting to discover things like alcohol. This is also the time they are starting to drive. Teenagers don’t always follow the law because they think they’re the bomb and they can’t gert hurt.
Do you like any television shows that have completed their runs? Do you wish those shows could come back with new episodes?
I liked the show flash forward. It ended without a finale and I’m angry about that. I wish it would come back with new episodes and start up again.
Do you collect autographed baseballs, hockey pucks, ticket stubs, funky earrings, classic video games or anything else? Sometimes we decide to hold on to a few objects because we think they will be valuable someday, or because we just can’t bear to part with them for sentimental reasons. Do you plan on saving any of your belongings for the future?
I don’t collect or save anything. Even when I was younger I never saw anything worth saving that was just an everyday item. In the future I don’t think i am going to save anything unless it has value or meaning to me.
Young people, especially boys, are playing bloodier and more realistic video games than ever before, and scientists are looking for links between real life violence and violent video games. However, the research so far is inconclusive. What do you think? Do violent video games make people more violent in real life? Why or why not?
I don’t think that the video games are the problem. I think that how a kid is raised has a major affect on the mark a video game will make. I think that the kids don’t really see the impact a video game can make but it is also a responcibility of the parents to make sure that they aren’t getting too ‘into the game’.
Q1 – Should children have complete control over the clothes they wear, and other aspects of their physical appearance, like hairstyles and makeup?Or should parents have a say in how their children present themselves to the world?
I think that there should be limits set on the clothing and make up a child should wear. I think very young kids should have complete freedom in what they wear so they can learn what they like and how to express themselves in their clothes. But when teenagers start wearing provocative clothes is isn’t acceptable.
Q2 – An organization called A Complaint Free World is trying to help people give up the habit of what it deems a toxic form of communication. Do you feel that this is a good goal to have? Do you think complaining is bad for those who do it and those who listen to other people complain?
I don’t think it is okay for people to complain all the time. Occasinally I think it is fine, but some people take it too far. People should not complain about things they take for granted, but I am guilty of that.
Q1 – Should comments among friends made on Facebook be considered private? Or should we expect that anything said on social media might be viewed by the world?
And if our boss doesn’t like what we write on Facebook, Twitter or other social media, should it be grounds for getting fired?
I think that social media should be private towards co-workers, employers and employees. People should not go through employees’ social media because there could be information or material that the person did not want a co-worker to see. On the other hand, facebook is public. We should learn to be cautious about what we post and the material we are making avalible to the world.
Q2 – Have you ever witnessed someone doing something wrong–whether a bully picking on someone weaker or someone committing a crime? If so, what did you do? Why?
Do you think bystanders have a responsibility to intervene when they witness wrongdoing?
Yes, I have. I have been around people ‘commiting crimes’, but usually these are things that I don’t see as wrong. I don’t join in but I don’t see why I see the point in stopping them. If people are going to be ‘bad, then I don’t have the power to make them stop doing ‘bad’ things. People wil do whatever they want whether I think its wrong or not. Bystanders don’t really have an effect on people because if someone really wants to do something, they won’t stop.
Q1 – Are you a fan of a particular sports team — or actor, television show, musician, band, movie, writer or anything else? Fanhood can bring you joy, and make feel like you’re part of a community with other like-minded people. Has being a fan of something or someone ever seemed to define you as a person?
I am obsessed with the show Dexter. I have watched every episode and its one of those shows that just pulls you in so you can’t stop watching. None of my friends watch Dexter too so I don’t really have a ‘fanbase’. The show hasen’t really changed me as a person. It did make my interest in murder and stuff bigger.
Q2 – We can’t help but watch them. Whether it’s “Gangnam Style” or videos about sports tricks, we watch — then tell our friends to watch — and pretty soon a video has gone viral. What are your favorite viral videos? Why?
I like videos that Shaycarl makes because he is a family guy and he is such a good role-model. He lives sucha normal life and he is just awesome. I also like to watch pet videos (tea-cup pigs and dogs). I don’t know why I like to watch them, I just like so look at how cute they are.
1. Have you ever watched an Internet video that teaches how to do something, or explains an idea or problem? Have you ever considered making a video like that? What talents or expertise would you want to share in your own Internet video? What would you want to teach the world?
I watch a lot of internet videos about science and weird facts that I’ll never be able to put into use in the real world. I also like to watch videos that talk about human rights and things like that. I dont think I would ever make a video about anything but if I did it would probably be about stupid science facts or dance or something. I want to teach the world about human rights and show them what is going on in the world and why everyone should know.
2. Lines are an unavoidable part of life. We wait in lunch lines, lift lines, gas lines, bathroom lines and fan lines. What do you wait in line for now? What would you spend the night in line for?
I wait in line for food in school and out of school. I wait in line at clotihng stores. I would spend the night in line to meet someone who is absolutely legendary. How long I would be willing to wait would depend on the person. I don’t lik eot wait but I’m pretty patient.
Does buying and accumulating more and more stuff make us happier?
I think it depends on the person and also the item. I think buying things does make some people happier butsome people have different values and they see other things to be more fit to spend money on like family or to just save it up to vacation or something. Buying things can make your quality of life better by keeping up with technology and trends.
How does your school deal with a student who misbehaves?
I haven’t been at beaverbrook for long enough to know how people are punished. I see a lot of people who are late for class and it is just brushed off or forgotten. At my old high school people could skip and it wouldn’t be an issue. Teachers didn’t really care, (its our education not theirs). People fought a lot in the smoking pit though and they would get suspended.
Have you ever been to summer camp? What was your experience like? Will you be going to a camp this summer? If you were to design the perfect summer camp experience, what would it be like? Why?
I have been to 2 summer camps. I have been to a horse riding camp and a Christian Camp. Both camps were fun. I don’t really feel a need to go back. I’m not going back this summer. I don’t want too. I don’t really know what a perfect summer camp would be. I think it would br something that we would be outside a lot and not using technology.
Have you ever gotten advice or learned how to do something via the Internet? Did it help? Have you ever
gotten bad advice?
I’ve learned how to do pointless things on the internet. I use to look up how to do stupid tricks and learn them but I never really communicated with anyone over the internet, so I have never gotten good or bad advice over the internet.
What do you like about your PRIDE class? What don’t you like about your PRIDE class?
I don’t find pride class very useful. Pride class is boring and if you aren’t friends with anyone in your class. The activities that we have to do I don’t see what the point of them is. If i could change anything, I would take pride out of the schedule and just have homeroom. It would make more sense for the classes to be alphabetical. That way we can become friends with the people we will be sitting with at graduation. (This would be super helpful for people whose last names start with letters later in the alphabet.)
What did you do over spring break?
Over spring break I stayed at home and relaxed. I hung out with a few of my friends and spent time outside. I didn’t really do that much. So. That was my spring break. 🙂
